Tawk.to alternative: when the free chat widget stops being the cheap part

tawk.to is the most widely installed live chat widget in the world, and its software really is free. What it is no longer is a chat box that waits for a person to come online: it now sells an AI agent that answers on its own across chat, WhatsApp, Messenger and more. That changes what a fair comparison looks like. This page is built from tawk.to's own help center and product pages as published in September 2026.

What tawk.to is in 2026

The free part is generous and real. Live chat, a shared inbox, ticketing, a hosted knowledge base and a CRM come with unlimited agents and no subscription. The inbox now pulls in WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Telegram, SMS through Twilio, and Gmail or Outlook email alongside website chat. An earlier version of this page described tawk.to as website chat with add-ons; that was wrong and has been removed.

tawk.to's founder is unusually open about how the company makes money, and it is three things: $29 a month if you want to remove the “Powered by tawk.to” branding, the AI Assist add-on for automated answers, and hired human chat agents at $1 an hour. In other words, the software is free and the answers are what you pay for, either by the hour for a person or by the message for the AI.

AI Assist (previously called Apollo AI) is trained on your FAQs, knowledge base, crawled website pages and documents, can hand a conversation to a human, and, according to tawk.to's end-of-2025 update, can answer live chat, WhatsApp, SMS and Messenger, including voice notes. Our old claim that tawk.to only answers when someone is online is no longer true either.

The price of an answer, not the price of the software

Because AI Assist is metered per message, the question for any business that wants chats answered automatically is simple: what does each AI answer cost? tawk.to publishes its plans in its help center:

Three details in the billing guide matter more than the headline prices. A credit is spent on every AI message sent, and that includes Smart Reply and AI Commands, the AI tools your own agents use while typing, so an AI-assisted human reply can draw from the same pool as a fully automated one. Plan credits reset each billing cycle, while extra credits cost $30 per 1,000 and roll over. And running past your balance produces a negative balance you settle later, so a busy month shows up on the invoice rather than as a hard stop. Annual billing includes two free months.

Replio meters the same thing in a different shape. Every paid plan includes a monthly AI reply allowance, 8,000 on the $49 Starter plan, 30,000 on the $149 Scale plan and 50,000 on the $349 Pro plan, and extra AI replies are $0.006 each, which is $6 per 1,000. Replies your team types are free and unlimited, and messages themselves are never capped. Both tools count roughly one unit per AI message sent, so this is closer to a like-for-like comparison than most AI pricing gets.

Three volumes, priced both ways

Here is the monthly cost of AI answering at three volumes, using each vendor's published prices on monthly billing. It deliberately leaves out tawk.to's optional $29 branding removal and Meta's WhatsApp fees, which apply to any WhatsApp provider.

Read it honestly and both conclusions hold. At low AI volume, tawk.to is cheaper, and its free Hobby plan matches Replio's free plan at 100 AI answers a month. As AI volume grows, the per-message price decides the bill, and at $30 against $6 per extra 1,000 the gap widens quickly. The table also hides two things that cut the other way: tawk.to's seats are free and unlimited while Replio's Starter plan includes two, and Starter covers one of WhatsApp, Instagram or Messenger (plus Telegram and the website widget), while tawk.to's inbox connects its channels at no charge.

Where tawk.to is the better choice

• A large human team answers most chats. Unlimited free agents is the best seat price in the market, and no AI plan changes that.
• You need email and SMS in the same inbox. tawk.to connects Gmail, Outlook and Twilio SMS. Replio has no email or SMS channel.
• You want a free help center and ticketing. tawk.to hosts a knowledge base and a ticketing system at no cost.
• You would rather pay people than configure AI. Hired chat agents from $1 an hour is a genuinely unusual offer.
• Your AI volume is small. Under about 1,000 AI messages a month, Growth at $29 is cheaper than any paid Replio plan.

Where Replio is the better choice

• AI does most of the answering. Once you are past a few thousand AI messages a month, 8,000 included replies and $6 per extra 1,000 cost far less than per-credit pricing at $30 per 1,000.
• Your customers are on Instagram. Replio answers Instagram DMs and runs comment-to-DM replies when someone comments a keyword. On tawk.to, Instagram was listed as a coming channel in its end-of-2025 update.
• You want one price instead of stacked add-ons. A Replio plan is the AI, the channels and the seats in one number, rather than a free core plus a branding fee plus an AI tier plus credit top-ups.
• You also send, not just answer. WhatsApp broadcasts to opted-in contacts, Telegram group tools, and a Telegram storefront with Stars payments sit in the same product.
• Your customers write in many languages. The AI replies in each customer's own language across 50+ languages, and Live Translate on Scale and Pro lets your team read and answer any of them too.
• Customers send pictures. Replio reads images such as payment screenshots and receipts as part of the conversation.

1. Start Replio on the free plan, or the 7-day Starter trial.
2. Give it the knowledge tawk.to already has. Import the public pages of your tawk.to knowledge base, or paste your shortcut FAQs, so the agent starts with the answers your team already wrote.
3. Test before you switch. Ask it the ten questions your chats get most, in the languages your customers use, and fix any gap in the knowledge rather than in a script.
4. Run both for a while. Two chat bubbles on one page confuse visitors, so put the Replio widget on one section of your site, or on the pages with the most repeat questions, and compare.
5. Connect the rest. Add Instagram, Messenger, Telegram or WhatsApp, invite your team to the shared inbox, and remove the tawk.to snippet once you are happy with the coverage.
